Thomas Bouyant

With stocking trucks rolling across the state I decided that this week’s lure of the week would be the Thomas buoyant. This spoon has got to be by far the best trout spoon ever made in my opinion. Manufactured by Thomas Spinning lure, Inc., this spoon comes in 20 colors, and two different sizes 1/6oz & ¼oz, it was once made in a big 5/8oz size which I loved for brood stock salmon but has being discontinued. My favorite color by far and am sure it’s some of you readers favorite is the red /gold, followed by the blue/silver. Other colors do work and have there days and time, but the red/gold just about always will catch freshly stocked trout.  I like to use my buoyant connected to 4lb test via a small 20lb duolock snap. This lets the lure move freely for more action.  Some anglers like to tie directly to the lure, and this in my opinion can cause the edges of the lure to sometimes cut the mono while fighting a large fish. Ball-bearing snap swivels let the lure spin which takes away from its swimming action so I tend to use them only when trolling and do not recommend them for casting. Retrieves can vary with spoons so it’s always a good thing to try different speeds and let the fish tell you how they want it. Sometimes twitching the rod tip while retrieving a lure can cause fish to strike, but don’t over do it. The Thomas buoyant can be purchased at almost any bait shop or Walmart.  They will run you about $2. n change, well worth the price. This spoon works well on fall browns. Happy Fishing
